I was talking to a lot of people and most of them have some special interest in hacking. Here is a thread dedicated for it:

Top 10 hacking incidents of all time — instances where some of the
most seemingly secure computer networks were compromised

Early 1990s
Kevin Mitnick, often incorrectly called by many as god of hackers, broke into the computer systems of the world's top technology and

telecommunications companies Nokia, Fujitsu, Motorola, and Sun
Microsystems. He was arrested by the FBI in 1995, but later released on parole in 2000. He never termed his activity hacking, instead he called it social engineering.

November 2002
Englishman Gary McKinnon was arrested in November 2002 following an accusation that he hacked into more than 90 US military computer systems in the UK . He is currently undergoing trial in a British court for a "fast-track extradition" to the US where he is a wanted man. The
next hearing in the case is slated for today.

1995

Russian computer geek Vladimir Levin effected what can easily be
called The Italian Job online - he was the first person to hack into a
bank to extract money. Early 1995, he hacked into Citibank and robbed
$10 million. Interpol arrested him in the UK in 1995, after he had
transferred money to his accounts in the US, Finland, Holland, Germany
and Israel.

1990

When a Los Angeles area radio station announced a contest that awarded
a Porsche 944S2 for the 102nd caller, Kevin Poulsen took control of
the entire city's telephone network, ensured he is the 102nd caller,
and took away the Porsche beauty. He was arrested later that year and
sentenced to three years in prison. He is currently a senior editor at
Wired News.

1983

Kevin Poulsen again. A little-known incident when Poulsen, then just a
student, hacked into Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet was hacked
into. Arpanet was a global network of computers, and Poulsen took
advantage of a loophole in its architecture to gain temporary control
of the US -wide network.

1996

US hacker Timothy Lloyd planted six lines of malicious software code
in the computer network of Omega Engineering which was a prime
supplier of components for NASA and the US Navy. The code allowed a
"logic bomb" to explode that deleted software running Omega's
manufacturing operations. Omega lost $10 million due to the attack.

1988

Twenty-three-year-old Cornell University graduate Robert Morris
unleashed the first Internet worm on to the world. Morris released 99
lines of code to the internet as an experiment, but realised that his
program infected machines as it went along. Computers crashed across
the US and elsewhere. He was arrested and sentenced in 1990.

1999

The Melissa virus was the first of its kind to wreak damage on a
global scale. Written by David Smith (then 30), Melissa spread to more
than 300 companies across the world completely destroying their
computer networks. Damages reported amounted to nearly $400 million.
Smith was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.

2000

MafiaBoy, whose real identity has been kept under wraps because he is
a minor, hacked into some of the largest sites in the world, including
eBay, Amazon and Yahoo between February 6 and Valentine's Day in 2000.
He gained access to 75 computers in 52 networks, and ordered a Denial
of Service attack on them. He was arrested in 2000.

1993

They called themselves Masters of Deception, targeting US phone
systems. The group hacked into the National Security Agency, AT&T, and
Bank of America . It created a system that let them bypass
long-distance phone call systems, and gain access to private lines.

An Inside Look at Google

I've represented Google at many events for women in engineering, and I'm always asked the same thing: "What's it like to work there?" I certainly don't mind discussing the subject, but I often think it would be great if more people could see it for themselves. Well, now you can. We invite you to take a sneak peek inside Google and hear straight from some of our female engineers what life here is really like. Of course, our goal of recruiting as many gifted female engineers as we can also means encouraging young women who are still in school. So I'd like to issue a hearty congrats to the winners of this year's Anita Borg scholarships. - Jen Fitzpatrick, Engineering Director, Google

"The Google Story" - David Vise speaks at Google

Not since Gutenberg invented the modern printing press more than 500 years ago, making books and scientific tomes affordable and widely available to the masses, has any new invention empowered individuals or transformed access to information as profoundly as Google. I first became aware of this while covering Google as a beat reporter for The Washington Post. What galvanized my deep interest in the company was its unconventional initial public offering in August 2004 when the firm thumbed its nose at Wall Street by doing the first and only multi-billion dollar IPO using computers, rather than Wall Street bankers, to allocate its hot shares of stock. A few months later, in the fall of 2004, I decided to write the first biography of Google, tracing its short history from the time founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page met at Stanford in 1995 until the present. In my view, this is the hottest business, media and technology success of our time, with a stock market value of $110 billion, more than the combined value of Disney, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Amazon.com, Ford and General Motors.
Download - The True Story Of The Internet "People Power"

Host John Heilemann explores the interactive nature of the modern World Wide Web, from early successes like Napster and the still popular Craigslist, to more recent phenomena like the social networking sites MySpace and Facebook. http://science.discovery.com/tv/download/about/about.html In this episode, "People Power," teenager Shawn Fanning invents Napster and forever changes the way music is shared over the Net -- and, later, the way people communicate with each other via this medium. Download: The True Story of the Internet is about a revolution -- the technological, cultural, commercial and social revolution that has radically changed our lives. And for the first time, we hear how it happened from the men and women who made it possible. From the founders of eBay, Yahoo, Amazon, Netscape, Google and many others, we hear amazing stories of how, in ten short years, the Internet took over our lives. These extraordinary men and women tell us how they went from being geeky, computer obsessed nerds to being 21st-century visionaries in the time it takes most people to get their first promotion. And, how they made untold billions along the way. The style of the story-telling is up close and personal. With first-hand testimony from the people that matter, we tell a story that has all the excitement of a thriller -- full of battles and back-stabbing, moments of genius and moments of sheer hilarity. You will never surf the net in the same way again. Download is hosted by technology journalist John Heilemann. He's an edgy, combative, hi-energy New Yorker who never takes anything at face value. He's also a personal friend of most of Silicon Valley's most important characters and he revels in craziness of it all. After all, this is a story in which 20-year-olds become overnight billionaires, create, destroy and re-create more wealth in ten years then human race has ever seen, and still struggle to get a date

Thanks friend.

I have fixed the problem. Actually, I was setting up the cookie (referral cookie) under the html_footer.tpl (which was a big mistake).

Now I have shifted the cookie creation to our configuration file. Now it is corrected.

While refreshing, it used to find the cookie value and thus did not enter into cookie creating function. So by refreshing the problem vanished.

Once again thanks for notify the error. Keep visiting!

Check the magic_quotes_gpc ....

The PHP directive magic_quotes_gpc is on by default, and it essentially runs addslashes() on all GET, POST, and COOKIE data. Do not use addslashes() on strings that have already been escaped with magic_quotes_gpc as you'll then do double escaping. The function get_magic_quotes_gpc() may come in handy for checking this.

Ranking is dead, they rank in one location and the may not rank is a different location.

Companies should never enter into these contracts with a SEO (expert, everyone is an expert here) as SEO professionals will then pull the limits for ranking, which may be bad for you. http://www.dawebmarketing.com/kb/clients/choosing-seo-company.html Do read and show this to your client.

I generally recommend this model for charging your clients:

Pay per performance:
1) Fix minimum operational costs - Since we hire a lot of people and need to pay them, we will have to charge a basic fee. I generally suggest $250 - $1000 based on the work (You can go higher as well). For this $250 - $1000+, lay down the work deliverable very clearly and explain the reasons why you are doing these work. Let the client verify the work on different forums.
2) The profit should come from the sales. I had divided the pay per performance into few categories

Search Engine Organic: around 5% - 10% for each conversion.

Search Engine Paid: around 2% - 5% for each conversions.

Affiliate marketing: around 3% - 6% for each conversion.

Referrals: If those referrals are created because of your efforts, 5% - 10%.

Direct: Upto the client, can be between 1% - 10% based on the offline campaigns that are running.

In case the clients don't have online sales, then there can be traffic based evaluations. Per 500 visitors, $__.

How feasible to opt for a Rank based model or should I propose them a traffic based model and why?

Because, this will help you think in the right direction. You will be able to think of campaigns that can become viral. Focusing on ranking is letting you use your brain for the best possible web marketing.

Ranking based payment is just a model where it becomes difficult for a good SEO company. In case if the client is rigid, go for it.

Look at the competition and the market, prepare an excel sheet and see your efforts and returns, charge them good money.

The best part of SEO industry is that there are no fixed pay models and the worst part of SEO industry is that there are no fixed pay models.

I have only concerns. If you need to work for 6 months to make them rank for some of the keywords then who will pay your operational costs? What happens if the clients leaves within this 6 months?

Answer to your question lies in: Competition of the keywords.

Dear all

Just help me out in making a Rank Based Performance evaluation model for SEO projects.

My client want us to bill them on Rank based performance criteria. That is if we agreed upon on few selective keywords we will bill our client only when keywords will rank in the first page of search engine.

Help me to prepare a specific pricing model:

1) How many keywords to be chosen
2) What should be the pricing criteria for Keywords i.e. should I charge high for a highly competitive keywords or I charge them a flat rate for all keywords irrespective of demand and competition.
3) Should I opt for a long term contract or should I bill them on monthly basis?
4) How feasible to opt for a Rank based model or should I propose them a traffic based model and why?

Any help on the above mentioned points will be well appreciated.

Thanks
