How do I judge a web hosting company?
I have been selecting web hosting for many of the businesses and friends. I am a big lover of ASO (http://www.asmallorange.com/hosting/). Recently, I met Saravanakumar (a nice guy) at Search Camp and he introduce me to http://www.hexahost.com/. I haven’t explored hexahost.com in detail yet.
How do I judge a web hosting company?
Generally, I choose web hosting through my friends, who have used the hosting service before me. I ask for following things:
- Support time: Most of the companies promise good but their support system is too pathetic, I had to wait for 48 hours to get something fixed with some of the companies. My next step was move on from these companies.
- Support quality: I had to waste hours with technical teams explaining the customization that was needed. They will eat up your head and will ask same stupid questions. My next step was to move on from these companies.
- Downtime: This was another frustrating issue. I recently signed up with a hosting company for large space, they were giving some huge offers. But their downtime time was intolerable. They had a set answer after fixing the problem, “It is working at our end, can you please check again”. I did not move from these companies as we hosted some unimportant websites here.
- Then I check at storage space.
- Then I check for bandwidth.
- Then I check for money.
There is no doubt that generally people take (first) decision on the basis of 4 factors:
- Storage space
- Bandwidth
- Money
- Some important features: Add-on domains, mysql database, Cpanel control, email handling, customization etc.
But their second decision for hosting company will be based on testimonial on support time, down time, support quality, customizations and other add-ons.
I stay with ASO as they offer high support, highly personalized support, power SSH, even SVN support … I can’t ask for more …. I pay a little high … for 1000 mb I am paying $10. Market can offer me 100 times more for this 10 dollars.
How do you tackle some hosting limitations
Get another hosting and have your sub-domain hosted there for images, videos etc. I am using Amazon S3 for storage.
