Wikipedia pays Google money – Wiki Ranking secret out

At Google (Banglore) and Search Camp(Chennai), people asked Adam Lasnik about Google getting paid from Wikipedia for getting them better ranks in Google SERPs. There was a clear denial about money (Obviously :) ).

Wikipedia’s ranking secret is out

I had written a post about Wikipedia ranking high in Google at http://www.idealwebtools.com/blog/wikipedia-serp/. Here are 2 more important factors to it:

  1. Businesses are not scared of linking to WikiPedia: Today when I was writing an article on Duplicate content, I wanted to link to a website that explains 301 redirection. I saw many other SEO sites doing a much better job of explaining 301 redirection than wikipedia but I was scared to link to them as I will never like to increase my competition by sending a potential buyer to another seller in the same industry. Most of the highly reputed AND RELEVANT sites do link back to Wikipedia. Such links are quite juicy and valuable. So keeping Wikipedia non-commercial and ad-free has worked well.
  2. User experience: Adam clearly mentioned that even when Wikipedia results are at 6th or 7th, people do click on it as they love reading Wikipedia. Most of the SEOs know that CTR has become a big factor in Google Ranking these days.

OOps, in case if you were looking for the right answer, I forgot to mention that WikiPedia doesn’t pay money to Google :) . Enjoy Wikipedia, Enjoy Google and Enjoy SFC (SEO for Clients).
